Some major differences between African Lions and Hyena

  • Lions are larger and weigh up to 160kg - hyena up to 80kg, height lions = 48" and hyena 35"

  • Hyenas live in family groups

  • Females are the dominant sex

  • Spotted hyena has 2 teats

  • Love lying in water on warm days

  • Speed 50kmph in short burst otherwise 37kmph but gallops for many km at approx 16kmph

  • Females bigger than males

  • Blunt claws and non retractable nails, opposite to lions, Hyenas cant climb trees

  • Does not roar and makes whooping, yelling, giggling and grunting noises

  • Male lions kill hyenas at every opportunity and hyenas drive female lions from kill

 

 

  • Both species will kill the other if they have the opportunity

  • Hyenas live in holes, drains etc called dens
