Some major differences between African leopards and African Lions:

  • Lions are larger and stronger, weighING up to 160kg - leopards up to 58kg, height lions = 48" and leopards 28"

  • Lions are sociable animals while leopards are loners

  • Male lions sport manes while the leopard does not

  • Colour differences with leopards having spots

  • Leopards rest and feed in trees and although lions climb trees this is usually done as a look-out or when playing or scavenging from leopards

  • Leopards have one to two cubs while lions usually have four

  • Lionesses hunt together and as a loner leopards hunt exclusively for themselves or the cubs

  • Lions top speed averages 60 - 80 kmph at short bursts and leopards 60 kmph

  • Only the leopard mother suckle cubs unlike communal suckling in lions

  • Lion prides usually retain all female and only males are chased out, leopards chase cubs away, regardless of the sex

  • Tawny lions have brown eyes while leopards have green eyes

  • Lions scavenge more than leopards

  • Leopards don't roar but is still vocal when advertising territory (sawing sounds)

  • Leopard males leave just after mating while lion males try and stay for as long as possible to raise their offspring

  • Lions will seek and kill leopards to ensure less feeding competition while leopards will not try to kill lions

  • Lions will defend their kill while leopards will rather focus on not getting injured and hunt again at a later stage

  • Leopard kills are usually pulled into trees where possible

  • Leopards prefer rocky areas, high trees and areas close to the river where they can move undetected while lions can be found in any area not to far from water\
